Man City vs Chelsea: Starting Eleven, Injury Reports

Man City vs Chelsea is right upon us as Pep Guardiola’s men will be looking to cut into Liverpool’s dominance in the Premier League when they take on the Blues at the Etihad on Saturday.

However, if the League Table is anything to go by, the London side has a better chance of catching the runaway leaders at this point in time!

The hushed whispers of this finally being Liverpool’s years are slowly gaining steam after Jurgen Klopp’s men completed a 3-1 win against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at the Anfield, right before the International break.

Consequently, the men in the lighter shades of blue have already dropped down to fourth in the table after almost one-third of the league games played, while contrastingly, Lampard’s young blood have never felt better going into this fixture.

Man City vs Chelsea, recent History

The London club have had a tough time going up against Guardiola’s men in the recent past. The 6-0 drubbing at the Etihad under Maurizio Sarri last season will still be fresh in the mind of the Blues’ supporters.

The below stat comfortably proves the dominance of the Manchester club against their London counterpart in recent times:

However, not everything is doom and gloom in West London, far from it, in fact! The summer transfer ban and the arrival of the club legend, Frank Lampard, has forced Chelsea to call on to their youths from the loan army and the academy, and boy have they repaid the faith:

The likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, and Fikayo Tomori have been in stellar form for Chelsea, as has been the recent signings, Mateo Kovacic and Christian Pulisic.

The worry for Chelsea

Lampard’s young guns are enthusiastic, full of energy, and bestowed with incredible talent. However, if there’s one thing that this ‘new-look Chelsea’ still lacks, it’s the experience of playing the big teams.

Blues’ defense, while on the road to improvement in recent weeks, has still been an area of concern. Let these wise words from Jose Mourinho paint the picture for you:

“They lost twice against United, they lost against Liverpool at home, they conceded four goals against Ajax and I’m very, very curious to see Chelsea in the next match at the Etihad.

“I’m curious to see if they found that great empathy between the good football they play and the pragmatism that the top teams must have to play against top teams.”

Playing Manchester City at the Etihad will arguably be the biggest test for the youthful Chelsea so far in this season, and if they are able to pass it, things are going to get real interesting in the Premier League Table!

The worry for Manchester City

Pep Guardiola’s side, on the paper, is arguably the most talented (and expensive) squad in the Premier League that has even been assembled.

However, football has always been a game of momentum and after coming out of a 3-1 defeat at the Anfield, while also nursing a few injuries on the side, Manchester City are as vulnerable and open as they have ever been.

The Citizens desperately need 3 points if they are to offer any kind of competition to Liverpool in the title race, and in that sense, this is a must-win game for the home side.

Injury report and predicted starting eleven

Manchester City will be without the services of Leroy Sane, Aymeric Laporte, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, while the gaffer would be hoping to have Ederson fit for the big clash.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will still be without the long term absentees, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Antonio Rudiger, while the likes of Ross Barkley and Christian Pulisic should be back fit for the encounter.

The Blues are expected to lineup in a 3-4-3 formation with Reece James making his second start in as many games, while Azpilicueta slots into the back three:
